192 HOUR UPDATE

Another call to his wife again last night. All he could find for dinner was ice cream and a coke float. He told her that Coke and Turtle Track ice cream are NOT good together. He had taken a break and said he is back on the road and trudging along. He is approaching Pelham at mile 266. He has dropped to 37th in the screwed (unsupported) runners division. It is getting closer and closer, 2 more days and 4 more check-ins until the finish deadline. The fourth check-in time, you have to be finished, or you didn’t make it. Wish him luck!

Westbrook is currently 34th in the screwed division of runner’s. After making it to Manchester, TN he finally came upon another runner, Shenoa Creer, after 2 days of seeing no one else in the race. All things considered, he looks pretty good. As for this morning’s check-in RW is past Busy Corner at 247 miles. Hang in there and keep moving forward!

156 HOUR UPDATE

At 3pm it was 95 degrees and a little later at 5:30pm, 97 degrees. Westbrook called his wife again and (of course after I mentioned delirium) he was all out of sorts and off course. He butt dialed her, apparently, and was speaking with a man who told him he was no longer on course and had to back track about 5 miles to Wartrace. I guess he will be finishing a 324 mile race rather than the usual 314 this year. He thought he was somewhere in my town, over an hour away and could not remember when he ate last. Between hunger, the hellish heat, and lack of sleep there is good reason for him not to think straight.

He called again a while later and said he made it to Wartrace and is back on course, found some food, and is going to find somewhere to sleep for a a while. Maybe after that he will be less delirious and know where he is going. Goodness!

He was late on his evening check-in, might have been asleep. They are tracking him at mile 240, past Wartrace. This will put him in 33rd place in his division (remember though, with additional mileage after going off course). Let’s hope he stays on track from here on out.

AND THE RACE GOES ON…

314 MILE (500K) RACE ROUTE

The Last Annual Vol State road race began July 8, 7:30 am. There are 66 runners competing this year. Divided by gender, 17 are female and 49 male. Runners are required to check in every 12 hours, 7:30 pm and again at 7:30 am, daily. For the initial 12 hour check in, at 7:30 pm, Westbrook has run 30 miles and is in 41st place right along with 4 other runners. These 5 runners are around the motel in Martin area.

I am sure it all began as a blistering hot July day. Follow up to see how these 5 fall into different places as the time and race goes on.

Well, well, well, Westbrook told me a while back that he had lost his turn sheet information for the course. At first I thought, he as run this so many times surely he knows the course. I asked and he reassured me that he knew where to go. Then I considered, how the hottest July ever coupled with the lack of sleep, enduring pain, and so forth, can induce some level of delirium. What if he is completely confused at some point and gets lost along the way? What if he is walking along in a zombie like daze and walks right passed a turn and unknowingly continues on the wrong route for a good distance?

Unfortunately, he DID get lost, twice. Two other runners happened upon him and realized he was lost and confused. They took him with them to ensure he was on the right path once again. He said they talked and argued with one another and then moved ahead. Westbrook did not have cell phone service to check in so the race admin did not have him on the tracking sheet or map. Once I spoke to him I had to tell him to also check in.

Collectively, we have him at mile 291 just passed Tracy City. He is 79th out of the 89 screwed total. Sandra, from the race admin contacted me to say he is at Steve Smalling’s house and safe. Steve annually has a fantastic aid and rest area for the runners set up. Hopefully, Westbrook can rest for a bit and gather himself enough to make it to the finish without adding extra miles.

LAST 24 HOURS

Westbrook has gone 276 miles and is over Monteagle. He was hurting badly, trying to make it over that mountain. He called last night, hearing that storms were coming through, to see if he would be able to take a break for his foot and shelter if needed. At the time he was right with Oprah and I don’t think he was planning on a break. I did tell him, per Carl at the race, that he probably could take a 2 hour break if needed and still be on track. He liked that but, being right there, I don’t think he could have…especially now seeing he is behind.

I know the weather last night involved rain and a lot of very consistent heat lightening. I woke up in the night and was amazed at how quickly the lightening was flashing. All I could think was how he might be doing out there on the road. I considered driving out to check on him, maybe encourage him along the way. Any aid from myself would disqualify him, and it may make him feel worse having someone there who can not help.

Again, people all along the route are aware of the race and love to do what they can to help. Pictures from welcoming signs along the route, compliments of John Price:

One week behind them and 3 days left to complete the 500K, or 314 miles, to The Rock! 57th out of 59 total, Westbrook remains ahead of Oprah. He remains in pain with a toe that is probably broken since the night before the race began. He said it is impossible to run now with the injury, and is walking to make it to the finish.

20180712_162814_1531446594481

He is at mile 223 in Shelbyville. YAYYYYYY, LESS THAN 100 MILES REMAINING! 28 screwed runners have quit and 33 total have dropped out, throughout the race. He is doing all he can to make it but will need SERIOUS recovery time when it is all over. Considering he maintains a streak of running at least a mile every day, he will not be completely off of his foot to heal. He will ALWAYS get in that mile if he can not do more, no matter, rain, snow, ice, illness, injury, or broken bones.

Wish him luck and pray he makes it safely!

NUMBER 94 on the map still with 164 miles, Westbrook slept last night and is on the road again today. He planned on sleeping behind a church but then realized they opened the doors for the runners, so he slept comfortably inside. He is in pain but still hanging in there. He is 64th out of 68 screwed competitors. 22 total screwed runners quit.

A great poem by Shawn Cox Sumner’s daughter that was posted on the Last Annual Vol State facebook page.

Another update after 7:30 pm. Stay with us and pray for all out there on the road.

Westbrook has FINISHED! As he originally hoped for, but thought he would not make it, Richard beat his time from last year finishing a day earlier. Getting older and running faster. Last year his time was 6 days 4 hours 56 minutes 16 seconds and this year it was 5 days 23 hours 49 minutes 59 seconds. Way to go, Richard!

Screen shot 2014-07-16 at 12.22.59 PM

Not only the faster time, Westbrook moved up in position and finished in a place of 8th in a division of 37 (one more dropped out at the end of day 6). Now he just has to get himself home where he will eat a whole bunch of eggs and rest. An article about the race from Richard coming soon.

This is the final update before the finish for Westbrook. He has 279 miles behind him and was approaching Tracy City. Now only 35 miles remaining. He will not rest anymore until he is finished. As of now, Richard is maintaining 11th place in a division of 38 runners. The temperatures have cooled to around 57 degrees giving the runners a tremendous relief. Wish him luck to bring him home.
