LAVS 2016 – DAY 5 AND 1/2 UPDATE

At some point in the race, a man was yelling for Vol Staters to come to his fruit stand by the side of the road. Westbrook walked over and said no to every drink the man offered until he mentioned a Yoo-Hoo. Now the man was speaking his language. He also got the best sleep he has had since before the race, last night. He happened into a  place with a couch and took that opportune moment to rest. For dinner this evening Westbrook had a yummy burger to fuel him forward. This all sounds great, right?

Well, now the bad news. Aside from the sweltering heat without reprieve, Westbrook has a badly blistered foot. His right foot has blisters on the ball of his foot and underneath his toes. Ouch! He has another blister on his heel but that one is not bothersome. He had to remove his sock and grease up his foot to continue running, or rather, hobbling along. He is running with a sock and shoe on his left foot and just a shoe on his right foot.

Out of the remaining 44 screwed runners, Westbrook is holding 29th place. He has 222 miles behind him and is approaching Shelbyville. Thus far 19 runners have quit the grueling race. In that 19, 13 were screwed and 9 crewed. May the remaining competitors drag themselves to the finish.

LAVS 2016 – END OF DAY 5 UPDATE

Westbrook is now 26th place with 208 miles in, just past Lewisburg, Tennessee. In Lewisburg the current temperature is 91 degrees but with the humidity it feels like 104 degrees. Oh, God bless! Stay hydrated, runners, and seek shade whenever and wherever you can find it!

Westbrook says he feels terrible and it is incredibly hot out there. He and another runner just finished eating. He is coming into Shelbyville, Tennesee and says the rest of the way is wide open and will be HOT! The runners are all suffering.

LAVS 2016 - DAY 4 AND 1/2 UPDATE

LAVS 2016 – DAY 4 AND 1/2 UPDATE

Four and a half days into the race and one more screwed runner has quit. Another runner who is crewed is with the police in Lewisburg, in order to give her IV fluids. Further reports from the Last Annual Vol State page:

“i am not sure when there will be another comprehensive update.
andrew will finish later today,
and then we have a sizeable gap
(probably 6 or 7 hours)
until the parade at the rock begins.

82 started.
2 have finished, about to be 3.
17 have quit
1 is in police custody.

everyone is hurt now.
they are all trying to marshall their remaining resources,
to drag themselves the rest of the way to the rock.

just before noon here in kimball.
the heat index has hit 105
aiming to top 110…
(again)
the thunderstorms yesterday afternoon dumped a lot of water on the ground,
which is now all steaming back up into the sky,
so we can have another lighting and rain show this afternoon.
lovely weather pattern for the runners on the road.

don’t you you wish you were out there with them?”

and “columbia is already at 110
lewisburg is a brisk 107
shelbyville is a mere 109
manchester is leading at 111.

this is where the bulk of the field is passing thru today

pretty sure there is a heat advisory out today.
someone ought to tell the runners,
just in case they dont notice.

the 105 here…
whoops, it just moved to 106…”

Westbrook is hanging in there. He has finished 197 miles and is past Culleoka, Tennessee. For this update he is in 24th place within the screwed division.

LAVS 2016 - END OF DAY 4 UPDATE

LAVS 2016 – END OF DAY 4 UPDATE

Four days down and over halfway there. Westbrook was actually over halfway as of the last update, but I forgot to mention it. At this point 4 more screwed runners have quit. Westbrook is currently 23rd out of 46 remaining screwed runners. He has 181 miles and is past Columbia with one other runner.

The next main area for Westbrook to reach is Culleoka, Tennessee where it is currently 86 degrees but feels like 96 degrees, and the humidity at 72 percent. This afternoon it will reach 94 degrees with a 40 percent chance of rain and thunderstorm. Maybe it will cloud over and rain to cool everyone down a bit.

LAVS 2016 - DAY 3 1/2 UPDATE

LAVS 2016 – DAY 3 1/2 UPDATE

Around noon today, depending on one’s location in the race it was 104 or 108 degrees with “almost no clouds to block the sun” (reported from Last Annual Vol State facebook page). That is not even the hottest part of the day! Oh goodness. I feel for the runners out there. One more screwed runner has dropped out of the race. I hope the rest of them can hang in there with no serious problems due to the heat.

Westbrook is in Hampshire, Tennessee with one other crewed runner having accomplished 164 miles thus far. He has scooted on up to 21st place. Yay, Richard!

LAVS 2016 - 72 HOUR UPDATE

LAVS 2016 – 72 HOUR UPDATE

Three days behind them and into day four, Westbrook is in Hohenwald at 144 miles with 2 other runners. He finally slept for 3 hours and consumed a breakfast burrito to help sustain him for more miles to come. Refer to the map above and notice the tombstones. At this check-in, 4 more people have dropped out to make a total of 12 who have quit (5 crewed and 7 screwed). Currently, Westbrook is holding 22nd place, of 52 runners, in the screwed category.

LAVS 2016 - 60 HOUR UPDATE

LAVS 2016 – 60 HOUR UPDATE

Halfway through day 3 and all we heard at home from Westbrook was that it is “hotter’n’ hell out here!” Apparently the people of McKenzie, Tennessee were aware of the race and welcomed the runners while providing some aid and support. Love seeing the attention and help from the public! (picture from Last Annual Vol State facebook page)

Westbrook is maintaining 23rd place out of the remaining 54 screwed competitors. He has 125 miles behind him while making it to Linden where he is with 3 other runners. Hopefully he can find ways to try and beat the heat. More to come so stay with us.

LAVS 2016 - 48 HOUR UPDATE

LAVS 2016 – 48 HOUR UPDATE

Two days in and Westbrook has moved to 24th place in the screwed runners division. He has conquered 104 miles and past Darden. He ate a breakfast burrito at Sonic for some more fuel and says the worst part of the course is coming up at the Tennessee River and then to Linden. Wish him luck!

As of these two days, 8 runners have quit. Five of those who quit were in the screwed division. It is very hot out there. Hopefully, everyone else hangs in there.

LAVS 2016 - 36 HOUR UPDATE

LAVS 2016 – 36 HOUR UPDATE

For the 36 hour update Westbrook is being tracked at 85 miles past Parker’s Crossroads. He is number 95 on the above map. As of this time frame, 2 competitors have quit the race, one in the crewed division and the other in the screwed division. Within the screwed category, Westbrook has moved on up into 19th place.

Approximately 9pm, Westbrook called in about 4 miles before Lexington. He intended to sleep more during the day but simply opted for a 20 minute nap under a shade tree and continued along. Let’s all wish him luck. He needs to get some more rest before delirium sets in.

LAVS 2016 - 24 HOUR UPDATE

LAVS 2016 – 24 HOUR UPDATE

Day one is complete. Per the update, Westbrook has finished 61 miles and is past Mckenzie. In the screwed division Westbrook has moved up to 27th place. The map above has him listed as 41st place, but that is out of all the competitors combined to include the crewed runners. We are only concerned with the screwed division. It is a whole other type of race with no support on the road.

This update is from 7:30 am. Westbrook called home to check-in this morning as well. As of 9:50 am, he had completed 65 miles and was just past Huntington. He continued moving through the night with only 30 minutes sleep behind him, saying he wanted to go on while it was still on the cooler side. He intends to get a bit more sleep sometime today.
