We are trying to post the full update but are having trouble with the internet right now. The Vol State website will not allow us to view the map this morning due to high traffic. Richard has completed 301 miles and has ONLY 13 TO GO, of course, all up hill. He remains 12th overall, 9th individual, and 6th individual/unsupported.

OK, here we are…

Vol State 2013 Day 6 Nightly Check-in

Richard was approximately 40 miles from the finish when he last called his wife and said he would spend all night on Monteagle, all up hill. He said he will be VERY disappointed if it’s more than 40 miles. He was around 275 miles into the race. 39 miles to go!

He is 12th overall, 9th invidual runner, and 6th individual/unsupported runner. He hasn’t seen anyone on the course when Jan told him his place. He couldn’t believe it and said he thought he was around 28th place. Haha!

He will probably run through the night and finish some time in the morning. That is good to hear since today the heat was horrendous for all the runners.

Look for the new, and hopefully, final report in the am.

Westbrook was reported as approaching Shelbyville in 14th place overall. He is currently the 10th individual runner and the 7th individual/unsupported runner. He has run 222 miles thus far and is not stopping. LESS THAN 100 TO GO!

Richard called his wife, Jan, to tell her briefly that he made it to Shelbyville. His phone was dying then. Hope he can find somewhere to charge it or he can’t check-in.

Next update tomorrow.

Day 5 morning check-in

Sorry for the delay on this update……Westbrook seems to be feeling good and doing good. As of this morning check-in he was past Culleoka, leaving Mooresville and almost to Lewisburg Square. He has moved into 16th (15th if the one relay team has in fact dropped out – no more check-ins from them) overall, 12th overall in the individual runners category and 8th overall in the individual/unsupported category. He is doing great and moving up.

Evening update coming soon.

The results thus far have Westbrook 18th overall but it looks as though a relay team may have dropped out making him 17th overall. Out of the individual/unsupported runners, Westbrook is in 11th place. At check-in time Westbrook was in Columbia but reported planning on making it to Glendale and the Bench of Despair sometime tonight.

We will see where he is in the morning. Our update will not be posted here until late afternoon.

Richard has moved up in the race and is currently 23rd overall, just past Darden. He is 15th in the individual/unsupported category. He called in and said the heat has been so high that he has napped during the day, has been feeling better and running more at night. Well, last night it was actually cold for him. He didn’t really bring much in his pack for cold weather so we will see what this does for him. He continues to gain on his opponents and pass them by at some point.

Keep posted for another update this evening.

Here are the first day results from the official race website. Richard had a little trouble with dehydration today but as of his check-in, he is still going while others have already checked into a hotel for the night.

Day 1 check-in

OK, it is here, Vol State 2013. Richard will run the race uncrewed, or screwed, as the race website posts it. The race is a 500K (314 miles). The start is in Dorena, MO all the way to Castle Rock, Ga. The race will start July 11 at 7:30 am.

All he has with him is one small pack to carry on his back while he races for days, similar to the pack he carried last year in the photos below. His plan is to be outdoors the entire time, sleeping where ever he can find a semi-comfortable place. A hotel will come into play ONLY if there are severe storms where he may need to take some sort of shelter.

Richard will drive to the finish of the race tomorrow where he will be driven over the course to the beginning.  There is a website for the race if anyone would like to track him while he runs, http://www.tinyurl.com/volstate2013 (Westbrook is number 55 on the map). If not, we will be posting updates as often as we can on here. Once again, he is uncrewed with NO support, as most of the runners are in this race. They are starting with 55 individual runners and some relay teams as well.
